GRE Argumentative ESSAY

The author speculates based on the national study of two-income families preferences for the healthy, outside meals and the increased consumption of seafood in Bay City that if the Seafood restaurant specializes in seafood dishes, it will be profitable. Although the argument seems tentative at first glance, it is relied on the speculation that can be falsified based on various factors.

It is assumed that since the Bay City restaurants have increased the consumption of seafood dishes since last 5 years by 30%, and thus it will be continued in the future as well. The speculation can be wrong, if the inclined consumption of seafood dishes is based on the factors that can be changed in the future. For instance, it is possible that the seafood price declined in the last 5 years based on the increased availability of seafood dishes. However, the price may get increased for the decreased availability of seafood for various reasons. such as restriction on fishing imposed by government for preventing the extinction of sea mammals. Eventually, it will decrease the people’s likelihood to take the seafood based on it higher cost. In order to make the argument convincing, the author should first mention the solid reasons that in the future, people of the Bay city will consume the seafood dish with the same rate if not less or more.

Along with the future speculation, the speaker is also assuming that since most families of the Bay City are two-income families, the families will take seafood from the restaurant as it is less time consuming. The assumption is based on the national study which propagates that the most two-income families prefer to eat fewer home-cooked meals. It is possible that the people of the Bay City does not have the same belief as most of the people of the nation. Presuming that the Bay City people prefer to cook home meal food as buying from outside can be expensive despite having two income families. Hence, it is not always the case that the major trend of the country could be followed by almost all the regions of the nation.

Similarly, the study also propagates that the since most two income families prefer healthy food for meals, these families will more likely to consume seafood. Yet, it can be proven wrong if the Bay City locals believe that the most healthy food is salad, beans, and other vegetables. Hence, their preference for the seafood could be less in Bay City. To make the argument convincing, the author needs to identify the actual trend of the residents of the Bay City instead of relying on the country’s trend.

In order to make the argument more convincing the author needs to first provide the answers to the queries raised in the above paragraphs.
