which sentence is true:

  • There is/are a dog and two cats in the room.

“There are a dog and two cats in the room.” is correct. If we use comma instead of “and”, we should chose “to be” according to the noun after it. It means if noun is plural, you put “to be” in plural, vise versa you put “to be” in singular. For examle:

There is a cat, two dogs over there.
There are two dogs, a cat over there.

I would say the following: There’s a dog and two cats in here. Simply get rid of the comma.

  • There’s a cat and two dogs over there.
  • There’s two dogs and a cat over there.

Verbs can be singular in this way, but I think it’s rather informal.

But what I’d prefer most is:

  • I have a cat and two dogs over there.
  • I have two dogs and a cat over there.

    They both are not correct. Using and isn’t the same with comma. You should steadily observe I wrote above
