Which one is correct?

He maintained a good rapport with them

or

He maintained good rapport with them

?

Probably the first but as the sentence is taken out of context it is not possible to say for certain.

In which context do you use the second one?

It’s unlikely that you do, which is why I said ‘probably the first’.

If you were to place the sentence in context, the answer might be different.
