What does “get to have” mean?
I know the meaning of “have to get”, like “must get”, right?
And the meaning of “have got to have”, the same as “must have”
But don’t know the meaning of “get to have”.
Is it just the same as “get or have”?
‘Get to have’ = have an opportunity / a good chance to possess.
Thanks!
It could be a fake, but I reckon not — you get to have a feel for what’s real and what isn’t, in this job. (here get to have = should have) is it ?
Hi Learner,
That’s not quite right.
You get to have a feel for what’s real… = You develop the ability to possess a feel for what’s real…
I ran into this expression from “Friends”, Ross’s line:
“Basically he told me to get over myself and just do it, ya know.
So I though about what you said and I though about what he said.
And, well, his way, I get to have sex tonight so. . .”
He compares Rachel’s advice and Joey’s advice about if he should have sex with his gf .
And he decided to follow Joey’s advice.
So I thought “get to have” means “decided to do or concluded to do” for the first.
This is informal speech.
In this sense ‘get to have’ means ‘have the opportunity for’ (See MM’s post #2 above)
Yeah, I know. MM’s post was helpful.
