Gerund or Infinitive (in this sentence)?

Which sentence is right? Is there a grammar instruction for it?

  1. The ideas are good, but you may need to spend a little bit more time fine-tuning all the details.
  2. The ideas are good, but you may need to spend a little bit more time to fine-tune all the details.

If both are correct, are there any differences in their meaning?

I think both sentences are OK. There is no practical difference in meaning.

There may be a subtle difference between the sentences, but nobody is going to think that hard about it. In practice they will interpret both sentences exactly the same.

Though there is not much difference (except syntactical), I would recommend the infinitival construction.
