Hi Frederic,
As Anneelbe has said, ‘give a broad hint’ is a good translation. For those who don’t know German and don’t the meaning in English, let me explain. It is used in the sense of suggesting something obviously without actually saying it, spelling it out. Here is an example of giving a broad hint: You have some guests in your house and they came for an evening meal but they don’t seem to want to go home long after the meal is finished and you are tired and want them to go but you can’t say that openly so you start yawning and go on yawning. This way you are giving a broad hint. You hope they will get the point.
