1a. Let’s gather in the dining room.
1b. Let’s meet in the dining room.
2a. The meeting elected a chairperson.
2b. The gathering elected a chairperson.
Are they correct?
Where ‘gather’ and ‘meet’ are used interchangeably?
Please give some more examples to explain.
Thanks.
2a is incorrect as a ‘meeting’ cannot elect anyone. You might say ‘the members elected a chairperson.’
Gathering’ (group of people who have come together) is not the same as ‘meeting’ (occasion when a group of people come together)
‘Gather/meet’ can be used interchangeably where the definition is ‘come together’.
