I think the sentences in red are far more natural than the ones in purple.
I suspect you can see a dual meaning in the 2nd:
I found people there to fight me:
You’re probably asking yourself
Does this mean ‘I sought out people who were able to fight me’ or ‘I met people whose purpose was to fight me and that is why they were there’? The natural assumption would be to expect the latter meaning unless there was anything else in the context which would indicate the former.
The question does not really arise when ‘meet’ is there. Logically, you would not be seeking out people to meet you.
