formal academic qualifications

Thank you very much for your time, have a great day

Nowadays, some employers thought formal academic qualifications are important than life experiences and personal qualities when they look for employees. Why is this trend? Is it positive or negative?

Several employers have a tendency to look for employees who have formal academic qualifications than life experiences and personal qualities. It results in some bad problems. In the following paragraphs, I will enumerate two main reasons why employers do like that and its negative effects.

When we apply for a job, we are required to submit several documents, such as a cover letter, resume and academic records. The documents provide employers with what knowledge and skills applicants have. On the other hand, there is no way for owners to check applicants’ skills by life experiences and personal qualities before employing them. In addition, in the case of some fields like engineering, life experiences are not enough to carry out tasks, because we cannot learn how to design the structure of 100 stories buildings by life experiences.

Employing people depending on their formal academic qualifications can be one of the effective methods, but it causes several issues. I will provide two of the issues. One is that students will enter university for a better job, not for study, because some companies allow only university graduates to apply for vacancies. The other is that formal academic qualifications do not mean applicants are experts. For example, some people have a great TOEIC score, but some of them cannot speak English fluently unlike their grade.

Taking all that into consideration, even though formal academic qualification can be used to be a tool to check applicants’ ability, but it cannot be the best way, because it has several problems.
