for the sake of it

Is this sentence correct:
[color=red]1-They were destroying the building for the sake of it.
meaning:

[color=blue]They were destroying the building for the sake of destroying it.

My problem with “1” is that to me it seems to be saying that they were destroying the building for the sake of the building.

The sentence is correct - they were destroying the building for the sake of doing so.

…just for the sake of it
or … simply for the sake of it
is common too.
