For/of

Hello,

What is the difference between ‘for’ and ‘of’?
How to know when to use for and of?
Like in this sentence, ‘Please send me the part number ___ that Integrated Circuit.’
Which one is appropriate and why?

Thanks.

Deepi

This is always hard and best learnt through example and feeling … One example I tell students is to think of these sentences …

This present is for you … now think what does ‘for’ mean?
This is the wrapping paper of the present … now think what does ‘of’ mean?

So if you understand then you should be able to see …

Please send me the part number for that Integrated Circuit. … it could be correct if the part number is indeed FOR the integrated circuit.
Please send me the part number of that Integrated Circuit. … it could be correct if the part number is indeed OF the integrated circuit.

So in reality, you could use both depending on your meaning…

Hello Rob,

Thanks for your reply.
Quite complicated. Still your examples are good enough to make me understand.

In that sentence I would prefer to use ‘of’, since part number is not for Integrated Circuit, part number of Integrated Circuit is for us.
Am I correct?

Deepi

Yes you are …
