Follow the customs of the new country or keep the own customs

When people move to another country, some of them decide to follow the customs of the new country. Others prefer to keep their own customs. Which one do you prefer? Support your answer with specific details.

People usually travel or move to new countries for education,a business, a job and so on. At this time, a person faces a hard question whether to keep following his own customs or assimilate the customs of a new country. Some people do not want to accept the customs of the new place. However, I believe that a person should always absorb him self in the customs of the new country because it makes it easy for him to settle in a new country, helps him to make new friends there, and increases his knowledge about the new country.

To begin with, if a person is willing to follow the customs of the new country, it becomes easy for him to adjust there. A person can communicate with the local people there if he can speak their language. In addition, if he knows about the customs of the people’s daily lives there, it can easily create his space in his work environment. For example, when I was in India, we had a custom of taking nap in the afternoon for an hour. When I came to the United States for my job, I did not know that people here do not take the break for nap. I followed the same custom at the first day at work. This made me look like foolish. After that I decided to know about their all customs, which helped me to adjust easily in my work place.

In addition, when you know about the cultures and traditions about the new place, you can make new friends very easily. For example, after coming to the United States, I learned about all the festivals and their importance for the people here. This helped me to adapt myself enjoying all the events and festivals. Moreover, I came in contact with many people and some of them are my very good friends now. Thus, following the customs of a new place can help you to make new friends.

Last but not least, it helps us to broaden the knowledge about a new place if we follow the customs there. Customs are a way of knowing about the cultures and traditions of a new place. For example, I always like to know more about the customs when I go to a new place. When I went to India, I observed that the local people there started their day with the morning prayer at a temple. I asked about the reasons and beliefs of these people behind this custom. This way, I came to know about their religions and morals for following their customs. Thus, knowing about the customs increases our knowledge in different fields.

To sum it up, some people do not want to accept the customs of a new place. However, I always prefer to assimilate the customs of a new country because it help me to adjust there, make new friends, and increase my knowledge.

TOEFL listening lectures: Why does the professor explain the history of coffee?

Hi Chaitalivpatel, I think you did a good job with this one. There are not that many mistakes, though you do have some word choices that could be improved. Your content is good, but there was a lot of repetition in your words and phrases, so I would only rate this a 4 out of 5.

Thank you Luschen for your time and suggestions.
