Fixing sentences

Hello,

I personally find the sentences listed below awkward but unfortunately I’m not completely sure if the sentences I’ve come up with are correct. Please go over them and help me make them right.

A: He is in debt for big amount. (I think this is wrong.)
How about these sentences?

He is in debt of a big amount
He is in debt of a big amount of money.
             He is in huge debt

B: The boat was tied up at a wharf. (I think “to” should be used instead of “at”, am I right?)

Thanks for your help.

He is in debt for a big amount -
Because you are talking about money, ‘large’ would be better than ‘big’ and ‘to’ might also be an acceptable preposition. Otherwise it’s okay, and better than your other examples except for ‘He is in huge debt’ which is also acceptable.
I would probably say:
He is facing a huge amount of debt.

B - Either could be used, depending on what you wish to convey:

at a wharf - that is the place where it is tied up.
to a wharf - that is the object it was tethered to.

Thanks B

You are very welcome, Nie.

Are you busy lately? It seems to be quite a few days between your posts at the moment. Or perhaps you have become so proficient that you don’t need the help any more? ;D

We’re not all forum addicts, you know. Ho, ho

Hi B

I’ve been pretty tied up lately. I wish I could say that I became so proficient that I found this forum unnecessary. English is such a complicated language to master and I think I’m still miles away from becoming an expert.  (LOL)

I’ll definitely need your help and I’ll keep my questions coming when I have time to sit at my computer.

Thanks for you time B

Hi Nie,

Bev is pretty amazing, isn’t she. She devotes quite a bit of time and effort to the forum and also makes it a point to get to know the people who post. Despite the fact that she answers a blizzard of questions from a lot of different people every day, she was nevertheless cognizant of the fact that you’d been missing for a few days. I think that says a lot about her as a person. She knows you and she cares.

It’s also nice that you took the time to let her know that you’ve been tied up recently.

But your skill is already very good indeed!

Ummm… thanks.
To return the compliment, I’m speechless to receive such praise from someone whose expert advice I’m in awe of and who I hold in such high esteem.

Things like that make all the voluntary time and effort worthwhile. I’m here because I like to help - as I know you are too, Amy.

@Nie,
I agree with Amy. You’ll just have to accept that you’re good now! ;D
