thank u so much mr torsten and ur group too.really i appreciate your efforts and how much you’r helping us to improve our english language.but really i still find difficulties to form sentences with correct prepositions .this is the most difficult thing i find to speak english well.so sorry ur lesson of prepositions didn’t help me too much.i need more and detailed explanation to get this lesson well.thank u so much

Please listen to my recording and respond with a voice message too. Many thanks.

i agree with you >>> i learn a lot from this story thanks Alan. I love too the accent of that girl i’ll listen to it again.

thanks

Hi Torsten. I don’t get the meaning of “used in”.

I am saddened by the fact that there is a very strong American accent in the recordings.
I hear “ad-vehn-tidge” instead of “ad-vahn-tidge”.
The fact is, the world is inundated with American material and some British actors have taken up this foreign accent.
Still, I hope that we will be able to ward off the “how RU” and other trends.
“The King’s Speech” did not receive so many awards without a reason…

What’s the difference between AT and IN, please?

It depends on the individual contexts.
Here are the basic uses:
oxfordadvancedlearnersdictio … tionary/at
oxfordadvancedlearnersdictio … tionary/in

Please I need to know how to use the preposition " by".

Dear Sir,
Thank you for your wonderful story, I must say, this is how the prepositions should be taught,
Great !

Hello
I don’t understand properly what the meaning of

been cancelled. I asked by whom they had been cancelled. I never knew the

  • whom means a person, does not?

Thanks

Hi,

The question raised by whom had been called a person.

Thank you

S.Shanthi

“I asked by whom they had been cancelled.”
This is a rather odd way of asking:
I asked who had cancelled them?

Hello Torsten,

I saw again your first letter:
Its link: 8 Prepositions or How I got that Job?

I misunderstood your request because I was looking for the all prepositions which we could find in ‘I got that Job?’
Which ‘8’ did you think?

Regards:
Kati Svaby

Hello Parallel,

If I translated word by word :’ on the top of sb’s tongue’ its meaning is the same in Hungarian and in English. So for us it’s very easy to understand this expression.

Of course its meaning not “to know a word perfectly” but "to know it but not being able to recall it at the moment".

I am in this situation with the names, I know them very much but I can’t recall them. In this time I say: Yes, I know, wait a second, his name is on the tip of my tongue.Several times I realized that only I imagined I needed only few seconds… sometimes few days.

Hi

I don’t know the meaning for 8 propositions, I searched through Bing there
also I don’t understand anything. Somewhere it has stated same group people
(same gender) should not get married as per Callifornia law. It applicable to all countries.

Please ignore my reply if it is wrong. Why are you giving such a confusing topic
to reply?

Thank you
S.Shanthi

Hello,

I found out which can be the 8 prepositions.

  1. at
  2. from
  3. for
  4. on
  5. throughout
  6. of
  7. with
  8. among

Why? Because only these ones can be only prepositions the others can be adverbs, adjectives, conjunctives, nouns and verbs also.

Hello,

I revealed my mistakes in 34# permalink.
Infinitive ‘to’ isn’t a preposition but an infinitive marker.

in under half an hour = two prepositions; its meaning in less one an hour
it would take about three times as long = it would take up three times long time
‘about’ is a preposition; but as long What is the ‘as’ in this phrase?
at least = adverb =‘not less than’ is not a preposition if we see the 2 words together; but ‘at’ alone would be a preposition.
up and down the motorway=preposition:up and down sth = in one direction and then opposite direction along sth
