I would be thankful if you could explain me the word extreme in the sentence below.

There are many misconceptions about the art world. Ask someone to describe what it means to be an artist, and they will probably paint a picture of one of two [color=red]extremes.

(As has already been discussed earlier, correlatives are sometimes heard/seen differently placed by users of good English, inadvertently though. Would you be inclined to accept my view and this small modification?)
