'extract' vs 'excerpt'

Hi,
What’s the difference between ‘excerpt’ and ‘extract’?

  • excerpt: a short part taken from a speech, book, film, etc.
  • extract: a particular part of a book, poem, etc. that is chosen so that it can be used in a discussion, article, etc.

Very generally speaking, I’d expect an extract to be longer than an excerpt.
