Expression "the letter the letter"

Could you please give me a hand on the passages below?

  1. Is the repetition of ‘the letter’ just for a sense of emphasis?
  1. Does this mean: He could be in my way. You would hate company when you are in such a situation.

1-- It is a misprint, Haihao. My copy reads: ‘His fingers drew forth the letter and crumpled the envelope’.

2-- Yes, essentially: ‘He will take me away from my planned itinerary. You hate company when you are in such a sensitive, private situation’.
