Expression: "It dates back to 500 years ago."

Could you please tell me if the following sentence is correct and natural?

I’d prefer these:

  • It dates back to 1503.
  • It dates back 500 (505) years.

Generally speaking, people tend to be a bit less precise when they use the format in the second sentence, so 500 is close enough.
