Expand, extend, make bigger

  1. Can I use ‘‘extend’’ as a synonym for ‘‘expand’’? Or should say, to make bigger?
The university plans to expan the fitness center.
The university plans to extend the fitness center.

  2. Is the fitness center the same as a exercise hall in English.

Thank you for your reply.

1-- ‘Expand’ (enlarge in all directions). ‘Extend’= lengthen

2-- It sounds like more than that to me. ‘Exercise hall’ sounds Victorian.

Thank you so much Mr. Micawber. In TOEFL IBT books you can find lots of old fashion words such as exercise hall.Since I had to paraphrase, I was not sure. Anyway thanks a million.
