It is an important topic whether grades encourage students to learn. I believe that grades play a significant role in encouraging students to study, but I also think that grading should take place in a right way. There are some reasons and I explain them in this essay.
First of all, grades give students a sense about how much they have learned. as an example, when I was a school student I got a bad grade in mathematics, and it was a sign for me that I need more study in mathematics. After that I increased my effort in order to learn mathematics better.
Secondly, when students realize that good grades bring satisfaction of their teachers and parents with themselves, they become motivated to study better. This can be a way of encouragement.
Thirdly, in my point of view, grading should take place in a right way. We see some teachers make students two groups, smart and not-smart, which can mentality hurt the students. This brings the belief for not-smart group that they never can improve their learning and receive good grades.
To sum up, although grading can encourage students, it can also affect adversely. So it is important to do grading students in a smart way which not only motivates student, but also makes them hopeful for better grades.

I have read somewhere that using verbs is better than verbal nouns in academic writings so for instance it’s better to write: “It is important to grade students” rather than
“It is important to do the grading of students”, is it right?
The first example is far more ‘clean’ and natural than the second, whether it is used in academic writing or more general informal writing. ‘… to do the grading of students’ sounds very strange.
