Global warming

Whether we like to admit or not, climate change is happening, and is having impacts on every sphere of our lives and the planet. In the light of this, there is an acute need for action.

Firstly, we need to acknowledge this phenomenon is in action, and no matter how much action we take in our lifetimes, it will not easily go away due to the volume of destructive gases already in the atmosphere. The environment is a key factor in the existence of human life on the planet. However, the recent change in the climatic conditions has left many wondering whether human beings and all the other living things will be able to cope with the future climatic conditions on the planet.
Experts believe global warming is caused from human activities such as industrial processes and are causing the earth to get warmer. The main cause appears to be the greenhouse gases humans are releasing into the atmosphere, particularly CO2. It is sure that if global warming is not curbed; it will lead to changing weather and rising sea levels which will endanger low-lying countries. Many towns on the coast will flood and disappear which will force origin to resettle inland and thereby they would lose their own identity by mixing in the big cities. Moreover, human actions such as massive damming - in order to save water for using for their personal and industrial purposes - causes falls in river flows and rising saltiness in waterways. As a result fishes and aquactic plant lives will be lost which will lead to damage to fisheries and food insecurity. Water shortage is already a problem for billions of people who lack drinking water and proper sanitation due to climate has become too dry. Meeting the West’s demand for bio fuels a largely part of peat bog rainforests has been clear-felled in order to grow palm oil plants for bio fuels to help reduce Europe’s CO2 emissions. However, the consideration in this process is left out that the huge of living peat, up to 15 meters deep, which had built up over the past 6000 years as woody debris release 30 times more CO2 by draining than will be saved by replacing fossil fuels bio fuels.
There are also many kinds of pollution such as air pollution, water pollution and soil contamination which are worsening the threat. They can have natural causes, such as dust storms in deserts, but it is mostly caused by exhaust fumes from cars. Other effects are smog in cities and especially, acid raining which damaged the forest. Industrial agriculture is the main source of many pollutants due to its immoderate use of pesticides, herbicides, etc., which contaminate the soil and the ground water. Last but not least, global warming also causes an animal migration patterns and some species may be even in danger of extinction, e.g. the polar bear. Climate models have also predicted an increased frequency of further natural disasters, the melting of glaciers, soil erosion, and depletion of the ozone layer in the near future.

Most of these events are already occurring and can be directly linked to global warming. If global warming continues as predicted, it will eventually have a strong impact on human health and wellbeing. Heat waves will claim the lives of the sick and the elderly and other health issues as asthma, heart problem would also occur. Farmland will dry up and would cause food shortages. It shows clearly that climate change is indeed an emergency on a global order would be a good way to end. In light of this, it is a time for the political will to exploit renewable sources like wind, water and especially, waves power which contain an abundance of energy that could be directed to turbines which then turn this mechanical power into elctrictiy. Although the obstacle to using this energy source has been the difficulty in harnessing it. Sometimes the waves are too small to generate sufficient power. But the trick is also to be able to store the energy when enough mechanical power is generated. In my point of view it can sufficiently replace water damming. Futhermore there are some suggested methods like injecting the greenhouse gas into the ground before it gets a chance to reach the atmosphere. After the CO2 is separated from other emission gases, it can be buried in abandoned oil wells and rocks. While this sounds great, scientists are not sure wheather injected gas wil stay underground and what the long-term effects will be. Alternative of this carbon sequestration methode is also to let plants and microbes clean up contamination. Scientists are trying to genetically modify the plants to take up contaminants in their roots and transport them all the way to the leaves for easy harvesting. The plants can then be incinerated or dried and shrunk for storage. Plastics are clean and convenient, and they have improved the lives of ordinary people everywhere. But most conventional plastics have another property - durability. Until recently, attempts to produce plastics that will eliminate this problem, by rotting after use, have failed altogether, or resulted in expensive products. But now there is a glimmer of hope. Several biologicaööy derived plastics are emerging from the world’s chemistry laboratories. These plastics can be used to make a wide variety of goods, from clothing fibres to food containers. Unlike conventional plastics their ultimate raw material is not oil, but maize. And, also unlike conventional plastics, they are digestible after use.
To summarize, I would say that the future course of action on climate change should be based on a fair deal that is acceptable internationally. The deal should be based on providing standards that will control CO2 emission to the Atmosphere.
