English is a universal language. Agree or Disagree
Language is a means of communication between people. There are more than hundreds of languages such as German, French, Hindi, English etcetera and over thousands of dialects each distinct and unique from the other used in different regions. English is the one of those languages widely spoken but still not everywhere. So, I disagree with the statement that English is a universal language for the following citations.
Firstly, in some poor under developed nations still due to limited access to media and insufficient exposure to the outer world ,people still do not understand or speak English. They are totally isolated from the outer world either due to despotic rulers or due to unavailability of technology. For Example my friend once had to go to North Korea for some survey. He had a very hard time to communicate with the indigenous people after landing there as nobody could speak English as they only spoke korean. He literally explained what he wanted by just using gestures or images.
Moreover, some developed nations also do not endorse the growing dominance of English language and so they intentionally avoid its usage. Some nations still keep the rivalry of the colonial era with English. They want to promote their language and want it to exercise the dominance over English. For example last year my dad went to France on a tour and he experienced over there that the people made tawdry expressions if he asked some question in English. At a shopping mall the manager did not help him when he asked for help arguing that he could not understand English but when he got a call on his phone, dad discovered that he was good at English. Eventually, he asked the tour guide that why he did not respond when he asked him something in English, the guide replied that mostly French people do not like the rising acceptance of English universally and not French.
Summarizing the points made in the essay, though English is spoken in many of the countries still some under developed countries fail to use it due to limited exposure and resources. Also, other developed nations feel that their language should be promoted and not the English language out of jealousy and rivalry;consequently they have failed lately to acknowledge it. So, I disagree with the statement that English is a universal language.
