due to vs. attributed to

Hello,

#1 The closing of school was due to the snow.
#2 The closing of school was attributed to the snow.

Is #2 acceptable? If so, is there any difference of meaning between #1 and 2?
If not, why?

Thanks in advance!

I’d say “Schools were closed due to the snow.” Or simply, “We had a snow day.” Both #1 and #2 are unusual to me.
