then please explain the word “till” with examples.
Have you tried finding examples in a Learner’s Dictionary, Debashis. Looking for yourself will help you become an independent learner.
yes ,I tried . But I get often confused between “till” and “unless”. Also previously I thought that “until” is antonym of “till”.
what I think about “till” is that it describes some point on the time axis . But What my confusion is like following:
We’re open till 6 o’clock.(the sentence is taken from that dictionary.)
Now can’t I say
We’re open unless the time is 6 o’clock.
That doesn’t work, but you can say ‘we’re open until 6 o’clock’, because you are correct about ‘until’ and ‘till’ being antonyms. Did you see this footnote on the dictionary page:
“Till is generally felt to be more informal than until and is used much less often in writing. At the beginning of a sentence, until is usually used.”
‘Unless’ cannot be used in place of ‘until’/‘till’
In your example it indicates that if the time is, for example, five past six, then they are open. It is only at exactly 6 o’clock that they are closed.
