Thanks a lot.

According to http://www.ldoceonline.com:
starter
-
in British English: a small amount of food eaten at the start of a meal before the main part [= “appetizer” in American English]
We had soup as a starter, followed by steak. -
a person, horse, car etc that is in a race when it starts:
Of the seven starters, only three finished the race. -
someone who gives the signal for a race to begin:
e.g.: The starter fired his gun.
under starter’s orders (=about to begin the race) -
in British English: late starter - someone who begins doing something, especially a job, later in life than people generally do
-
in British English, spoken: for starters - used to emphasize the first of a series of facts, opinions, questions etc:
Well, for starters, you’ll need to fill out an application form.
beginner
-
someone who has just started to do or learn something:
an absolute beginner -
beginner’s luck - unusual success that you have when you start something new
In sports, the term starter means a player that will participate in a game versus his back-up who is benched (not playing). In this context, a starter is a really good player, usually an expert player and that is practically the opposite of a beginner.
