difference between I stayed not long and I didn't stay long

Hi,

What’s the difference between these sentences:
I stayed not long.
I didn’t stay long.

Thanks,

I stayed not long.
I didn’t stay long.
The first one is poetic and second normal.

It’s a question of register and genre, isn’t it, T? I would have thought you’d spot that.

Hi Molly,

I’ve noticed that you have a tendency to call forum users by the first letter of their names, is there a specific reason for that? As for your question, has it ever occurred to you that I often ask questions not just for myself but also for all the people who read the forum discussions?[YSaerTTEW443543]

Familiarity. Friendliness. Have you also noticed that MrP continually calls me “M”?

I do the same, but I get either criticised for doing so, or this forums’ trolls come out of the forest to destroy such threads. Why do you think that is?

So are you saying that you already know the answer to your thread question?
