Is there any equivalent of ‘death anniversary’? That word sounds rather… I don’t exactly know how to express it, but I just don’t like the word.
Nothing’s wrong with death anniversary:

It’s just not observed in every country, so for some people (including me) it sounds strange.
Ugh, I didn’t know they actually used that word. It sounds ugly. Why not say something like “the commemoration of X” or “the ceremony in memory of X”? As a a verb, “to commemorate X” or “to honour the memory of X” would do.
I’ve never heard it phrased like that, though I have heard:
‘on the anniversary of X’s death’.

well, actually I think it’s a difference in cultures that leads to this problem. In my country people celebrate their relatives’ deaths yearly. There is some sort of a party when people cook many dishes (for the dead person first, then the living people will eat them of course :D). That’s why the term is quite popular.
‘the commemoration of sb’ would sound rather too formal in this case (it’d better be used for publically important people, I think)
