Hello my esteemed trainers I have some lines here. Kindly help me

Which is coreect and why?

He ssuggested to go out.

Kindly explain the sentence structure in general and easy way.

Hello, Muzafar:

  1. I LIKE to dance.
  2. I LIKE dancing.
  3. I ENJOY dancing.

But native speakers will NOT accept “I ENJOY to dance.”

Why?

Well, here is a theory (idea) of two scholars. I do NOT know whether this theory is correct or not, but I thought that you would like to know about it.

They explain:

a. An infinitive (such as “to dance”) often refers to something that you have NOT experienced before.

b. a gerund (such as “dancing”) often refers to something that you HAVE already experienced.

c. When you use the verb “enjoy,” that must mean that you have already experienced something because you are saying that you enjoy it.

i. So you must use the gerund.
ii. Remember: an infintive often refers to something that you have NOT yet experienced. So it is impossible to “enjoy” something that you have not experienced yet.

Hi, Mr. james thanks for your explanation here,

I have known this from you besides what I know already, But I know others would surface to refute. Even though it speaks volumes

Especially, the infinitive.
Because it is held here that, infinitive suggests that, it is an action that is not applied generally.

Perhaps, it would not meet any refutation. I hope so.

God bless you!

The theory doesn’t hold well when applied to other structures:

I have never done so, but I’m sure I would enjoy riding in a helicopter. - acceptable.
I have never done so, but I’m sure I would enjoy to ride in a helicopter. - unacceptable.

Beeesneees/James M,

  1. He suggested (going out)/(X: to go out).
  2. We decided (to take)/(X: taking) a taxi.
    Am I right?

yes

Oops, each of them was left unexplained.

That is not an error. An explanation wasn’t requested.

Hello all my teachers
I had placed some lines which have been answered as per question. I am really thankful for that but it would have been great if the sentences were explained seprately. Kindly explain for me.
Thanking you all in anticipation.
