cyclone/ tornado / Hurricane / Typhoon

  1. The cyclone/ tornado struck Chennai with heavy rains and winds late last night.
  2. Hurricane is now approaching the coast of Florida.
  3. Typhoon attacked Philippines destructively for three days.
    Please correct all.
    Thanks.

Note, that in science, a “cyclone” is any rotating weather system. The general use though, in the US, a cyclone is a synonym for a tornado. In other parts of the world, especially India and South Asia, a cyclone is a hurricane that starts in the Indian ocean. {A typhoon is a hurricane that starts in the Pacific Ocean.}

Luschen,
“The typhoon hit/(X: attacked) Philippines destructively for three days.”
Can I use ‘hit’ here?
Or
Please re-phrase the sentence so that it looks nice.
Thanks.

No, the typhoon can really only “hit” once. You could use a word like “ravaged” or “devastated”, but using “destructively” with these words sounds redundant to me.

Also, we say “The Philippines”. So “The typhoon ravaged the Philippines for three days.”
