Here’s some more information:
In my opinion your sentence should be a mix of types 2 and 3 of the conditional.
e.g.: “If you hadn’t woken me up in the middle of the night, I wouldn’t feel so tired now.”

The point is he did resign as the next sentence tells us. In that case we need to go back a tense and say -‘ if he hadn’t resigned. If the second sentence reports that he didn’t resign, we would have to indicate there would be a positive continuation -
If he didn’t resign, life would continue as before.
