Could "had not resigned" replace "did not resign"?

Pakatan government.

If Dr Mahathir did not resign , Pakatan would still be the government now, he said, adding that all internal issues could have been dealt with.

Could “had not resigned” replace “did not resign”?

Thanks.

Hi K,

I would say: If dr. Mahathir had not resigned,…
So, yes, it can replace “did not resign”.

Hope this helps.

Hi K,

Here’s some more information:
In my opinion your sentence should be a mix of types 2 and 3 of the conditional.

e.g.: “If you hadn’t woken me up in the middle of the night, I wouldn’t feel so tired now.”

I hope this will help you even more.

The point is he did resign as the next sentence tells us. In that case we need to go back a tense and say -‘ if he hadn’t resigned. If the second sentence reports that he didn’t resign, we would have to indicate there would be a positive continuation -

If he didn’t resign, life would continue as before.
