Change the tense of a conditional sentence in reported speech?

Hi, I am so confused when doing such kind of exercise. When we change a normal sentence in reported speech,we often change the tense when the tense when the introduction clause in past tense. Do we change the tense of a conditional sentence like others???

Hi Dphvu,

Give us an example of a conditional sentence to see how this can be changed to reported speech. In the mean time you might like to look at this:http://www.english-test.net/lessons/6/index.html

Alan

How can we change the following sentences into reported speech:
1/ Tom said “If I pass the exam, I will offer you a big gift for your help”
2/ Anna said “If I were Mary, I would study much better”
3/ John said “If I hadn’t been drunk last weekend, I would have gone to the party”

Thanks for your help!

1.- Tom said that if he passed the exam, he will offer you a big gift for you.
When reported speech is used in the past, the main verb is used in the past tense; when future tense is used, the main verb is used in the simple present.

2.- Anna said that if she were Mary, she would study much better.
3.- John said that if he hadn`t been drunk last weekend, he would have gone to the party.

God bless you and merry Christmas.
Cisco.
