By Walk or By Walking on foot by foot

Hi All!!
This is my first post, after I searched the internet and couldnt find an answer.

Recently Ive been corrected by an English friend who told me, my:by walk` is not proper English.

I normally used to say: i came by walk (after they asked me how I got to that place.
Would it be better to say; I came by walking.

My friend told me On foot would be the best option. And By Walk is quite awkward.

he said, best option is On Foot second would be By Foot.

but how about By Walk? I thought I learned this from an American friend.
please help me out. Is it OK in AME to say By Walk/By Walking?

my first question here,
ChibiM

Hello, Chibi Maruko-chan– and welcome to English-test.Net.

Yes, ‘on/by foot’ is the natural English– ‘I came here by/on foot’. ‘By walk/walking’ is definitely not native English, so I think that you misunderstood your American friend. However, you can certainly use the verb: ‘I walked here’.

Hi Mister Micawber,
Thank you for your response,
Funny you found out my name :? (just realized you`re from Yokohama)
I suppose you are British English? every heard about: came by walk…
or is that really 100% wrong?

Since I used to say this, I got so used to it, that it just sounds OK to me.

how about by walking? how did you go to school… by walking… still strange?

100% wrong, both of them. It’s time to change your habit.

I went to school on/by foot.
I walked to school.

Mister Micawber,
thanks a lot,
I already tried to change it to: By Walk, but just want to keep on re-confirming I`m wrong!

But are you British English?

any AME English here?

Charles is Canadian-American. He is not British. The phrase ‘by walk’ is not English – neither British nor American.

You can say ‘by car’, ‘by bus’, ‘by train’ but not ‘by walk’.[YSaerTTEW443543]

and if anyone has any other suggestions, feel free to post them,
thanks a lot Torsten and Mister Micawber!
