Hello,
Which of the following sentences sound natural?
1.1. Boredom came over me.
1.2. Boredom overcame me.
1.3. I was overcome with boredoom.
2.1. Boredom took over me.
2.2. Boredom overtook me.
Thank you.
1.1 = I experienced the onset of boredom.
1.2 = I became so bored that I was helpless.
1.3 = 1.2
2.1 This can’t be right, because when a phrasal verb has a pronoun object, the object must go between the verb and the particle. Also, “take over” and “overtake” are not the same word. This sentence means that I could not control myself anymore, because boredom was controlling all my actions. “Take over” means to take control from someone else.
2.2 = I tried not to get bored, but boredom ran faster than I did, and it caught me. (I hope that makes sense to you.)
Thank you, Jamie.
Now I see how ridiculous #2.2 must sound.
Hello,
Can that not be used to mean ‘Boredom overwhelmed me’?
Thank you
Actually, 2.2 sounds just fine. It was speaking allegorically. The sentence is find, and it just means that the person was trying not to get bored but that boredom set in anyway.
Thank you, Jamie.
