Increasing the price of petrol is the best way to solve growing traffic and pollution problems.

Nowadays, pollution and traffic jam are two issues largely discussed. One of the solutions proposed to solve this is increasing the price of the petrol, since it is the fuel used by the marjority of the transports. In my view, this is a very effective way of reducing the number of people using car and consequently decreasing pollution levels and traffic jam. Nevertheless, several other policies should be implemented in order to obtain better results.

Although today we have alternative fuels whose source is not petrol, such as ethanol, the gas is still the most popular. Once the price of the petrol is higher, people will tend to use more the public transportion system or share their cars with others in order to divide the expenses with fuel. Therefore, discouraging the use of petrol by increasing its price will have a major impact on the pollution levels and the number of people using their own cars.

Furthermore, encouraging other measures , such as improving other kinds of transport combined with the strategy of increasing petrol price might be more effective. For example, many people prefer to use their own cars, because the public transportation system has a poor quality. Therefore, improving the public transport might result in a reduced number of people using cars. In addition, encouraging people to use bicycle is another solution. Sao Paulo city is a great example: in this city, the government built some cycle paths in the city center. Owing to this, many people choose going to work by bicycle instead of cars.

In conclusion, becoming the petrol more expensive in addition to improvements in the public transportation system and encouragement of the use of bicycles are effective ways of reducing problems related to the growing traffic and pollution.
