Ans-Learning foreign languages is very important in today’s world. This is because the world has turned into a global village. When children of this generation will grow up, the y will get a chance to interact with other nations more frequently than us. Some people think it’s good for children to start learning a foreign language as soon as they start school; nevertheless others disagree. In my view, kids should start learning a foreign language as soon as they start school for several reasons.
First, at an early age, capacity of human brain to conceive and remember something new is at the peak. Scientists say that a human child has the most learning ability when he is from 5-9 years old. If the kids start learning a foreign language at this age, they will learn it quicker and it would be indelible. For instance, when my family moved to China 3 years ago, my daughter was only 5 years old then. We just knew our national language Urdu and a foreign language English at that time. However, my kids got admission into a bilingual school. This school required all the kids to learn written and oral Chinese. I was worried how my kids will be able to manage to learn this language as they had to begin from scratch. However, I was surprised to see that within a couple of months, my little girl’s Chinese speaking skills started developing. She soon started to write Chinese characters as well. Now, she is 8 years old and is able to speak Chinese fluently. She also writes essays in Chinese. So, at an early age, children really learn at a tremendous speed.
Second, at an early age, it is much easier to adopt an accent. This is because your own accent is not well- developed yet. As an adult, it becomes really hard to change your accent. For example, my daughter not only speaks Chinese but she also, she speaks Chinese in a native Chinese accent. Although we speak Urdu in our home, yet she also learns English from Native American teacher as I mentioned her school is bilingual. As a result, she also speaks English in a native English speaker’s accent. In contrast, I also learnt Chinese and know English but I have my own accent which is hard to get rid of. As you can see, it is easier for the kids to adopt an accent if they start off at an early age.
In a nutshell, not only do the kids learn a language quicker if they start it soon, but also they adopt the accent well. We should encourage our kids to learn a foreign language e
