ask vs ask for

Hello,
I really need your help. Please, explain the difference between ask vs ask for. In what cases we should use for? Does it change the meaning? I searched in the net but didn’t find an explanation.
Why do we say ‘I asked him the way to the bank’ but’I spopped someone to ask for the directions’?

Hmmm, just by looking at your examples you could make a guess.

How about you “ask somebody” (him) and “ask for something” (directions).

(actually you are usually asking somebody for something, but the somebody can often be left out).
There may be exceptions (there often are in English) but basically that’s it.

Thredder, thanks a lot for your answer!
