I just came across the term “care leaver” on a German site, which claims the word is used in the US and UK. How come I’ve never heard of it ;-)? So, are you familiar with the expression and if so, in what context? Thanks
PS: For some strange reason there is no English entry for the term on Wikipedia, just a German one:
I’ve never heard the term before. I can’t even guess at it’s meaning.
One dictionary redirected me to “foster care”. Another dictionary says it’s a UK term for children who have left residential care and continues to be entitled to ongoing welfare assistance. I suspect the second one is more accurate.
Wikipedia has an article under “Forgotten Australians or care leavers“ .
“The trauma experienced in care has affected care leavers negatively throughout their adult lives.”
