Are sentences correct?

He dares not go.
He dare not go.
He needs not go.
He need not go.

Which are the correct sentences?

Thanks.

  • Sentences 2 and 4 are correct. ‘Dare’ and ‘Need’ are used as modals.
  • Sentences 1 and 3 should be recast as ‘He doesn’t dare to go’ and ‘He doesn’t need to go’, since ‘dare and need’ are used in these as ordinary verbs.

Thank you, Lawrence. Yet, I do wonder why I have to keep on answering the same question all over again. Nonetheless, repetition does have a pedagogical value, don’t you think? @Anglophile

By the way, you can also say: ‘All he needs is a little rest and he’ll be right as rain in the morning.’

By the way, the questions “Are sentences correct” sounds rather strange. Better:
Are these sentendes correct?
Are the following sentences correct?
