Annihilation vs Extermination

Hi everyone,

I found that “annihilation” and “extermination” have the similar meaning, but in this sentence, which one can be used? Could you plz show me the reason why?

In some countries there have been widespread demands for the … of seal hunting
a. annihilation b. extermination

I knew the meaning of those words, but i do not know which one is used in that sentence and why?

Elimination/ Eradication would appear to be a more apt words.

Hello Ann,

Both ‘annihilation’ and ‘extermination’ are wrong in your original sentence; they would be better applied to the fate of the seals themselves.
