An SMS vs. a SMS?

a sms or an sms ?
A unversity or an university ?
A MBA o an MBA?

I agree that using a/an also depends on the pronunciation of words as (a.e.i.o.u)

but are there any exceptional cases also ?

Thanks in advance.

It’s all dependent on the pronunciation. The only reason that the ‘an’ developed from the ‘a’, is down to the difficulty of pronouncing some words immediately after the ‘a’.

There is a division of thought regarding what should happen when abbreviations are involved.
This may help.

Thank you so much beeeesneees
So what would you give for > university ?
“a” or “an” ?

I would use ‘a university’… because the initial sound of ‘university’ is the phoneme (sounding as in yacht)

Many people mistake the rule for using ‘an’, thinking it applies to the vowel letters, but it relates to the vowel phonemes (the first sound you hear when you say the word out loud).
