How do most Americans pronounce “ideology”?
Thank you.
My answer
P.S. Of course I wasn’t born in America, but I always heard it being pronounced with “eye” or “ai” not with “ee”.

Hello,
I hope the words “idea” and “ideal” are pronounced with “ai” everywhere…
Thank you, everyone, for your help.
My response
Again without the kids.

Luschen ,I laughed a lot when I heard you trying to say Idea-lology because that reminds me when I try to pronounce some long words:D
I used to pronounce it “idea-logy” but now,“ideeyology”
Thank you all.
Hi James and everybody,
I’ve heard people use both pronunciations, but I always pronounce that word with a so-called “long I” at the beginning: Ideology. The other pronunciation – ideology, the one with a “short i” – that one’s not hard for me to say, but that’s just not the pronunciation I use. I’ve always said Ideology.
So, tell us, James, which one do you like to use?

I use that word so rarely that I really (that word again!) do not know how I pronounce it. But I just feel more comfortable using the “short i.”
By the way, going off on a tangent, I wonder how the terms “long i” and “short i” came to be.
Certainly you can pronounce the “long i” in a short manner and the other way around. They are differentiated not so much by their length, as by the character of the sound (pitch).
To illustrate my point even further, we elongate vowels for emphasis, so “hit” might end end up with a very long i.
Also, the length is affected by the following consonant - wether it is voiced/unvoiced: hid - hit; heed - heat. Clearly if it’s voiced, then both "i"s will be a bit longer.
I think “long/short i” is a bit of a misnomer. And it can confuse the heck out of learners (I hope I didn’t come across as being grouchy)
Hi,
I think you are just being precise. Probably the best way is to use the phonetic symbols.
