alternative word for permeate

i think word “[color=darkred]permeate” is not a every day using word for the second example i provide. it sounds to me like a science word. am i correct ? if i’m what are the alternative word that i can use instead of word “[color=darkred]permeate”.

  1. The rain [color=darkred]permeated through/into the soil.
  2. The smell of baking bread is [color=darkred]permeating the kitchen

also i used word “alternative” to ask this question. is it good to put there. ?

There’s nothing wrong with the usage of permeating in either sentence. It can have a scientific sense, depending on context, but it’s acceptable to use it in non-scientific contexts too.

Your use of ‘alternative’ is okay, but the sentence is not quite grammatical and I suggest:
If I am, what alternative word can I use …

Note that in the phrase ‘if I am’ when it stands alone, ‘I am’ is not abbreviated to ‘I’m’.
If I am. - no abbreviation
If I am right / if I’m right
If I am annoying you / If I’m annoying you
etc.

The smell of baking bread is permeating [color=green]the kitchen.
The smell of baking bread is permeating [color=green]in the kitchen.

are above two sentences correct with “in the” and “the”?

also can i use spread instead of permeate ?

The smell of baking bread is spreading in the kitchen.

‘In the’ is not correct.
To use ‘spread’ you would have to say, ‘… is spreading through the kitchen.’

Hi BN, check me
The smell of the baking bread is “pervding” the kitchen.
Is “pervading” apposite here?

You mean:
check this for me.

‘pervading’ is appropriate

I didn’t want to ask the second question. but i forced myself to ask it. Because of that i’v cleared my doubts. THANKS.
