Adding s with surname

In articles related to sports sometimes the players are being referred by adding “S” to their surname, although they are the only player in the team with that surname. Example- the Smiths and the Taylors took the game away from the opponent team. Why is that so??

This means that the game was dominated by ‘the likes of Smith and Taylor’/by ‘players like Smith and Taylor’. Please let me know if this makes sense to you.

Ok , I got you sir and please can you explain me the reason for saying it this way.

Please note that you need to put ‘to’ before ‘me’ (explain to me). It’s not always possible to say why we say certain things or use certain structures because language usually evolves in rather unpredictable ways.
