Regarding the first sentence, is it absolutely wrong using “Caused + ing” ?

Caused… being is wrong-- or at least extremely awkward with anything beyond a personal pronoun (The strike caused my being late. Actually, I don’t like that example either). Otherwise, I just felt the sentence composition was a little awkward, so I supplied one of my own. Others may suggest other ways of expressing this statement.
