According to vs with respect to vs referring to vs duo to vs regarding

Hello everyone,

I’d like to know if there is any difference between ‘according to’, ‘with respect to’, ‘referring to’, ‘duo to’ and ‘regarding’ when they are used to express the meaning of ‘as stated by’. :slight_smile:

For instance:

According to the old legend, Romulus was the founder of Rome.

Could I replace ‘according to’ by ‘referring to’,‘regarding’, etc. Will the sentence remain the same meaning as it was before? :slight_smile: Many thanks.

" According to the old legend" is the only one that really fits the sentence in that construction.

  1. If the old legend is to be believed, Romulus was the founder of Rome.

  2. If we go by the the old legend, Romulus was the founder of Rome.

  1. If the (old) legend is to be believed, Romulus was the founder of Rome.

  2. Is an acceptable construction.( Don’t think old is required. Legends are old.)

  3. If we go by the the old legend, Romulus was the founder of Rome.

  4. Makes sense, but if I may suggest … " If we are to believe the legend, Romulus was the founder of Rome ".
