A two-piece suit vs A three-piece suit

Hi there,

What is the difference between:

  • A two-piece suit and
  • A three-piece suit.
  • Moreover can you also say: That man was wearing a beatiful outfit? (I don’t think so, but who am I)

I think I already know, a two-piece suit is usually worn by women and a three-piece suit by men, yet I also found on the internet a two-piece suit for men.

Thanks in advance: @Torsten, @Arinker, @NearlyNapping, @Alan, @Anglophile

A men’s two-piece suit is a coat and pants.
A men’s three-piece suit also includes a vest (AmE) or waistcoat (BrE).

My personal thoughts. YMMV
“He was wearing a really nice suit.” If it’s extraordinary, maybe “… a beautiful suit”, but you’re complementing the piece of clothing and not the person’s ability to assemble a look.
“Outfit”, I believe, refers more to the assembled look and so you’d be inclined to use it only if you thought the guy was actually working on creating an “outfit”, rather than just picking something out of the closet.

I’m going out on a limb talking about women’s fashion, but a believe you can just talk about a ’women’s suit”. I believe they are generally 2-piece and certainly more varied than men’s suits.

Yeah, like they do in French, un deux pièce. Thanks anyway for your lovely explanation. Do you know as much about haute couture as you do about the ordinary way to speak about men and women’s clothes? Hahahahhahaha  I just love you. Please don’t take it the wrong way. I just love you as a good friend. Don’t ask any questions, but it’s simply that way. You’re nice and humourous, that’s what I like in a person, you know.

Yours
Marc.

A good compliment for a man wearing a suit is, “You look sharp”.

I always thought a three piece suit was more dressy than a two piece. But the style changes over time and I don’t see three piece suits nearly as often as I used to. Businessmen wear two piece almost exclusively now.

“Outfit” is a term much more commonly used by women. I almost never hear men say that. Men just call them clothes, or in this case suit.

You might also compliment the “cut” of the suit.
