I wonder why “okra” is an uncountable noun. Even the words “cucumber” and “banana” can be used as a countable noun.

In the US, okra is popular in the south or among people who have roots in the south, such as most black Americans. (Which is natural, because okra is an African vegetable.) Most people in my sub-part of American culture don’t like okra, because it’s kind of slimy when it’s cooked. I don’t think I’ve ever seen or touched cooked okra, so I don’t know that for sure, but it’s what I hear.
