"a cat and a dog" vs "cats and dogs"

  1. A cat and a dog are often enemies.
  2. Cats and dogs are often enemies.
I think #2 is correct. Is #1 also acceptable?

I think both are correct and acceptable. I might have a slight preference for #2, since it’s a bit more concise, but there’s nothing wrong with #1.

Hi, Skrej

What about this one:

The cat and the dog are natural enemies

Will it work? (I want to refer to a certain species of animals using the definite article the. I don’t mean to use the to refer to a certain animal)

Thanks !

All three are grammatically correct.

Yes.

Thanks !
