40 degrees in Germany and it gets even hotter. Italy is drying out, forest fires are raging in France, Spain and Portugal. We are feeling climate change first hand. The earth is reaching its planetary limits. Climate change can no longer be stopped. We have a few years left to limit the losses. Humanly, economically, ecologically, financially. Climate catastrophes are becoming more frequent, and the costs are rising. In Germany, the damage caused by climate change from 2000 to 2021 amounted to at least 145 billion euros. Around half of this was due to 3 major events. The heat summers of 2018 and 19 and the floods last year. They alone cost a combined 75 billion euros. Germany suffered at least 7500 climate-related deaths during this period. Climate damage affects people, polar bears, coral reefs and also businesses and jobs, because the hotter the more unproductive we become. Crops burn out, infrastructure is damaged. Here, too, costs rise because rooms and facilities have to be cooled. All the more so because Germany’s infrastructure is outdated and hardly equipped for heat waves and flood protection. The war exacerbates the situation because the exploitation of climate-damaging fossil fuels is once again profitable at high prices. Oil companies are sitting on thousands of production rights that have remained unused until now. While Europe and North America have reduced their CO2 emissions through climate protection measures over the past decade, emissions in the rest of the world have risen. The supposed rest is responsible for up to 70 percent of all greenhouse gases, among them China is the biggest climate polluter.

Auch hier steigen Kosten, weil Räume und Einrichtungen gekühlt werden müssen. Umso mehr, da Deutschlands Infrastruktur veraltet auf Hitzewellen und Hochwasserschutz kaum ausgerichtet ist. Der Krieg verschärft die Lage, weil sich die Ausbeutung klimaschädlicher fossiler Energien bei hohen Preisen wieder lohnt. Ölkonzerne sitzen auf Tausenden bisland ungenutzen Förderrechten. Während Europa und Nordamerika ihren CO2-Ausstoß durch Klimaschutzmaßnahmen im vergangenen Jahrzehnt reduziert haben, sind die Emissionen im Rest der Welt gestiegen. Der vermeintliche Rest sorgt für bis zu 70 Prozent aller Treibhausgase, darunter ist China der größte Klimasünder.
