How to learn English?

Hi Greetings and Good afternoon.

Well for me, these are the ways I learn English:

 1. For vocabulary, I would copy those difficult words into an exercise book, then I will look out for the meaning from a dictionary or an online dictionary.
 2. Practice reading out loud whenever articles you can grab hold of either from newspapers or magazines.
 3. I always believe that practice makes perfect, trying out grammar questions either online or from books.
 4. Try your very best to speak English whenever opportunity you have, eventhough broken but I think this is a way to improve and correct your mistakes. Keep your mouth shut will only lead you to square one.
 5. Watching English movie first with English subtitle and listen carefully with the pronounciation, then watch again the movie without the subtitle and see how much you can understand what the actors are talking about.

For me they really help alot in improving my English in reading, speaking, listening, writing and understanding.

Hey all!
for me it was very hard to learn english whilst i was still living in Germany. I didn’t like my teacher at school a lot.
And if i wanted to watch a dvd in english i had to watch it by myself because non of my friends were interested in it.
So would end up learning for two days and quickly lose interest for the next two weeks or sometimes months until
i tried it again.
Than i decided to go for a trip to Australia and to work and travel there on a working holiday visa for one year.
It was really hard at the beginning, not just because my english was very poor but also because of the way australians
talk. They love to shorten words like ā€œbarbieā€ for barbeque, ā€œsangaā€ for sandwich, or ā€œfootyā€ for the australian rules football.
And the many Irish people i met on my way around the continent where probably even harder to understand.
At the beginning i met a lot of German travelers, and so i ended up talking a lot of german again which made it
really hard to improve my still really poor english.
The biggest improvement i made was when i moved into a sharehouse in Melbourne and lived there with people from all
over the world(no germans:), and the only language we could communicate with each other in was english.
After just six months without having visited any english class i was able to speak english almost fluently.
And just before i was going to leave, i fell in love with an australian girl who is now my wife:)
Since then, english is not so much of an issue anymore as we speak english all day long:)

So my advice for english learners, find yourself an english speaking partner:)
Or at least have people surround you that give you the chance to speak english as often
as you can.

Cheers honorfield

Bernd

Hello Torsten! As usual I’m very glad about your lessons!
Well I think there was a lot of asked about how to learn English so don’t ā€˜ā€˜judge’’ me if I repeat someones suggestion. Well I think one of the best way to learn any foreign language is a motivation, because without motivation you just don’t have any success, another way is self-confidences because without self-confidence you just wost your time, and the other probably most important thing when you learning foreign especially English you just need don’t fear about your mistakes because without mistakes nobody can’t have success.

hello everbody, i’m lilies, I from Vn, I like read book of Jack london, and i like news, because I’m journalist. I’m usually write articles, I don’t have time for film,

Hi everyone, I have a funny experience in learning english. I use to think that if I could go to an English language country and stay there for a while I would learn the language perfectly. But it is not like that, I live in Canada for 5 years, but I still have difficulties in the language specially in the field of writing. But I guess the best way that helped me alot is reading. One can learn expresions and improve the vocabulary in this way. Also watching movies is the other way which can help alot and finaly, of course, having contact will natives helped me the most. I am not saying that I havenĆØt improved at all, what I am trying to say is it takes time and alot of times.

Dear Torsten
Find you good
As I told you before I had done my university studies in english langauge, that was in the period from 1985-1990. But from that time and up to now I fiel that I am in my first positions in the English lader. Still I cant speak fluently, had many speling prroblems and find a great difficulties in understanding the topics if I speaks to Europian or even wotching a film.
I can guss that the chance for improving my english is realy by practising speaking & listening to a real english speakers.

I would recommend you to watch some English TV shows or movies. Do read some books with if necessary a dictionary at hand. There are a lot of good resources on the internet to help you learn English. :stuck_out_tongue: This way you quickly expand your word-base.

Good luck to you! :!:

hi, torsten
again i would like to ask you how many hours a day we should give to learn english and for what period. and what should be the method to learn slang, phrases, idioms etc. like native speakers

mukesh, india

Hi Mukesh,

Many thanks for your questions. Here are the answers: How to learn English?

By the way, if you want to continue using our forum you need to change your typing habits since our forum is for people who want to improve their English. You have developed the habit of ignoring basic rules of the English language. For more, please read this: How can I improve my writing skills?[YSaerTTEW443543]

Mukesh, it really isn’t about how many hours a day you should dedicate to learning English. It is just how well you absorb the information you are receiving. If you skip one step in the " learning ladder "which Torsten distributes at the correct intervals of time, then you will be lost in a jungle of English.

Read and digest every e-mail that you receive. Don’t think you can just quickly read through it. Memorise it, every word, and if you don’t understand, STOP, don’t take one more step until you do understand.

Come to the Forum and seek the answer to your problem. DON’T take one more step until you are satisfied that you now fully understand the answer. If you don’t understand, ask AGAIN!

You are all entering a MINEFIELD. Tread slowly and with great concentration as to the next step that you take… Good luck.

Thanks a lot for your English coaching I learned a lot of knowledge through your website, I will post my reply in future without fail.

suppose in memorization method by reading and learning word for word endlessly; although it be stiffer it seems more useful.

Hi everyone,

It seems to me very effective to learn English in the Torsten way, I mean listening native speakers on a day basis and it doesn’t matter what it would be BBC, DVD or maybe audiobook… And I guess it’s really crucial trying to write down something you can remember from your day listening. I should say that I have started not long ago but I like it indeed and native speech looks for me more understandable from day to day. For example here is my todays notes:

"BBC. Was speaking about BRIG countries and their relationships. Something about the financial crisis, IKEA top-manager or maybe owner of the company said that he decide that we haven’t reached the bottom.

Audiobook. It was the story from O.Henry something about peaches. I have understand only that a braid wants a peach and his bridegroom asked a boy to find it. The boy was searching each and every grocery, fruits store etc. to get peaches…

BBC again. It was about the new character of Sasha Baron Coen ā€œBrunoā€ austrian gay reporter. Something about political meaning"

For maintaining my listening blog (or ESL blog or whatever=) ) I use evernote.com. You can write from a home, work, from a desktop PC or a laptop or a mobile phone and everything will be synchronized automatically.
Maybe it will be useful for somebody.

Best regards.

There are many ways to learn English. I read joke books, computer books and emails and messages in forum like this to learn English. I don’t like mailing list because emails come the whole time and most English speaking people in mailing lists like that use to many difficult words.

I watch DVD’s and videos sometimes to improve my English. As my English is not what it ought to be I just watch TV-programs and DVD’s for youths and I watch them in half speed or what to call it as I can’t read all text in normal speed.

Hi Annisatu,

What do you mean by ā€˜english grammer’? You probably are referring to ā€˜English grammar’? You can only learn English if you are ready and willing to change your habits. Do you think you are?[YSaerTTEW443543]
